Lonely Lomo

I have been working on this piece for a few weeks and have finally given in to it. I have been working on completing a body of work that is going to go into my first solo exhibition. I am pretty excited about it…details to come. The image was exposed after a photo shoot. I had my eye on a several places along this road, so Heather (my wonderful friend and assistant) and I stopped on our way back so I could make some exposures. I exposed some using a Lomo Diana (such a great piece of plastic wonder) and then I exposed some more using an old 35mm rangefinder camera. I love rangefinders, they are super awesome. The final piece is a composite of a negative that came from the Lomo Diana (mysterious goodness in the background) and the house came from the rangefinder exposure. There are some other layers of goodness added as well as some push and pull here and there. My work keeps getting bigger, which is odd because I have always worked fairly small. The print is going to be about 23×23 inches…maybe about 30×30 inches framed.

The Other

I just got through 2 much needed weeks off. The semester has started once again, but I really am thankful for the time I had off. Mostly I played catch-up, but I also indulged in my “other” love which is “making stuff.” It is definitely not really deep stuff. This is something both my Mom and I really enjoy. We both agree that we like to do it regardless of the outcome. I think we just like the process of “making stuff” or “toiling” as some would call it. What I also like about this “other” love of mine is that it aids in my creative process. Sometimes I just feel like I don’t have another ounce of creativity left in me, so when I start just toiling with things it revives some of that creativity which leads to other, maybe more meaningful things. I feel there are so many times when I find a lot of meaning and fulfillment just doing what I love…even if it doesn’t make you money, bring you fame, or even if nobody else gives a hoot. During the two weeks I had “off” I worked on some projects for items around the house, like a few towel racks, a necklace rack, a monogram sign, and a chalkboard sign (I am obsessed with chalkboard paint right now). I absolutely love going to antique stores as well. To me there is just something interesting about an object that has seen more time than you and has had previous owners. They offer a bit of mysteriousness behind them. And the thought of giving them new life is interesting to me. I guess that fits right into why I make the art that I do. The mixture of the following items came from antique stores, craft stores, World Market and one of my most favorite places, Anthropologie. Some are functional, some are decorative, either way, I just had fun making them or re-doing them. It sparked some new creativity and some new ideas about future ventures, which was enough for me.

Heather Said Yes

Heather said Yes to the Dress and she said yes to Brian this past weekend at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill. They had a beautiful wedding and I am looking forward to sharing those pictures soon! Heather chose to have her bridal portraits made at the Carolina Inn which is a beautiful and historic inn in the heart of Chapel Hill. You may be thinking that you have seen Heather’s face before. You just might be right. Earlier this year Heather was featured on the TLC show Say Yes to the Dress. I absolutely love her dress! Very classic and very elegant! So, here are her bridal portraits….

I just finished with Jeremy and Jessica’s pictures and am ready to share! There wedding was quite beautiful and everyone had such a wonderful time. I can’t get over how lucky Jessica was to be able to continue with her outside ceremony plans. It was pouring down rain directly before the ceremony and honestly stalled just long enough for the ceremony. Right when the ceremony was over the rain started again and didn’t stop all night until they were ready to leave. I really enjoyed getting to know this couple. I wish them the best in their new lives together and am thankful that they chose me to share this day with them. Here are some pics from their big day:

Meet Alex and Alyson! Or Al squared as their friends like to call them. They are a super cute and super fun couple. We met up in Wilmington for some fun times. It was a hot one out, but they were troopers and did an awesome job! They are both in school at UNCW and don’t have too far to go before they graduate. I am really looking forward to their wedding next June…it sounds like it is going to be a beautiful day! So, here are some of my favs from their session:

Photovision Review and Discount for You!

This past year I subscribed to Photovision. The Photovision DVDs are (as stated on their site) “educational solutions for professional photographers brought to you by Ed Pierce. I have really been enjoying them . It really doesn’t matter what type of photography you do, they is something for everyone. The video sessions are a combination of interviews of professional photographers as well as showing them actually working. As you can see I mainly make art and photograph weddings, but I am still able to pick up on new information from photographers photographing completely different subjects than I am. The best part about it is that I can watch it at home. As a full-time art instructor that is huge for me.

I have also purchased the digital calibration target from Photovision as well and am still experimenting with it and working on fitting it into my sessions. If you are not familiar with the target, it is a tool to help you gain the correct exposure as well as the correct white balance. From what I have experienced so far, it is an awesome tool. One of those things you want to have with you at all times! I am still working on fitting it into my workflow, so when I get it down, I will share more.

I had a great time hanging out with Jessica and her gals this past weekend at her wedding. She had quite a beautiful wedding despite the rain. It rained just about all afternoon. However, it really was amazing because it held off just long enough for her ceremony, which was outside. A few months back we got together and did some bridal portraits. She did a great job working it! Good times were had by all!

Casey & Amber :: June 19th 2010

Casey and Amber were married on June 19th 2010 in Beaufort, North Carolina. The ceremony and the reception were held on site at the Duncan House downtown Beaufort. It was such a beautiful wedding and I was overwhelmed (in a good way!) over all the wonderful details they had in place to celebrate the day. They were such a wonderful couple to get to know as well as both of their families. The wedding was directed by Rachel Munro of Bridal by the Sea and she did a superb job of keeping everything on schedule! The catering was done through the Beaufort Grocery Company and it looked fabulous! I’m definitely going to have to try that place out next time I am in Beaufort. I am going to miss these two…they were lots of fun!

Kicking It Old School

It seems that film is now considered an “alternative process”; in other words an alternative to digital. I still love using film. Much of my fine art work begins with a film-based exposure. I still pull the film camera out for portrait sessions though. One of my students this summer wanted to do some off camera lighting with film, so I thought I would do a couple test rolls before he shot his. The last time I used off camera lighting with film I was kicking it old school with all the sync cords. This time I used PWIIs with my Pentax 67. It’s a beast of a camera, but I love it. I also shot a roll with a Mamiya 645 (hence the different print ratios). I was shooting with 400 speed film (what I had at the moment), which limited me from the beginning with ambient exposure. With digital you can lower your ISO if you need less exposure. I also overdeveloped by about a stop…hence the grain. So, I took my hubbie Shannon out and played a little bit. I didn’t get the ambient exposure I wanted, but it was fun none the less.
